Queen Lupita.

Shameless stanning.

Lupita Nyong’o has been doing promotion for Queen of Katwe (not a slave movie) and just announced her October Vogue cover!

I have a secret that I can finally share… Guess who came to see me back home in Kenya?!

Head wraps, lessos, Kenyan people pictured as participating full human beings and not elegant props and Lupita slaying in her usual Oscar winner-Lancôme brand ambassador-magical black girl-way. I am especially enamored by the depiction of head wraps as something elegant and regal. And on a black woman.

“Being able to use my platform to expand and diversify the African voice .. I feel very passionate about that. It feels intentional, meaningful.”

~ Lupita Nyong’o

The natural interaction between the subject (Lupita) and her environment (Kenya) is a lovely unusual thing to see in a Vogue magazine. When often ‘exotic’ cultures simply play as back drops for the photo shoot.

The humanity attached to this spread set in Kenya is one we rarely see in fashion editorial shoots set in countries with black and brown people (see McCurry for Valentino). And it is a welcomed breath of fresh air.
